Power of Touch
When Mike and I fight, it can seem like we are worlds apart. We may not have the same objective and may not be seeing eye to eye. When we are way off, it often flows over into our daily lives. It can throw off our daily routines as I try to stay out of his way, and he tries to stay out of mine. It can make living under the same roof challenging. We can’t even both be in the kitchen together, a place where we usually work well together, without running into each other. It’s miserable.
Thank goodness times like this are few for us. One thing we have found that helps us bridge that gap, when we do have big fights, is by making sure we still touch each other. It is usually as simple as placing a hand on the other person’s leg or a simple kiss on the other person’s cheek.
That simple act of touch helps us to feel connected. It is a physical reminder that we are on the same team. My hand touching his skin comforts me and allows my nervous system to relax. It allows us both to relax and reconnect.
Of course, a simple touch isn’t the end of the fight. It is, however, the beginning of the repair. The start of making a resolution and to find a common ground and make our relationship stronger.
I am amazed at the power of touch. It can be a life preserver when we are at the end of our ropes. Do you feel that way in your relationship? Tell me how touch has improved your relationship by dropping me a line on social media or email me at Steph@KoruLifeCoaching.com
